Chapter 13

Cadence gave him the address, and it took Derrick only a few moments to plug the info into his phone and pull up the map directions. Derrick packed up his laptop, and Lauren turned off the spirit box and grabbed her purse. She would have to tend to the register before she opened for business tomorrow, but it could wait for now. They all piled into Aiden’s van and made a pit stop at his house to grab a camcorder and the tape that he had never even told his companions held such evidence. Then Aiden drove them to the apartment building of Detective Halleran, following the directions voiced by Derrick’s phone.

“Is anyone else nervous?” Derrick said on the elevator ride up to the tenth floor. Both Aiden and Lauren smiled and nodded.

“They aren’t the only ones,” Snow said. “Are you sure bringing the tape out is a good idea? We had Aiden bury it for a reason.”

“I know Andy. He won’t cross any lines, and it will show him that I can still be in danger.”

“You’re manipulating him into helping us,” he said with a mixture of trepidation and wonder.

“I think after the last time I spoke with him, I get to kick him in the knees once or twice, metaphorically speaking of course.”

Snow chuckled, and then the elevator dinged, announcing that they had reached the floor. They all filed off of the elevator and headed down the hall to Andy’s apartment. Aiden had somehow been elected to be the one who knocked, so he did so.

“Yeah?” came Andy’s voice from inside after a moment.

“Detective Halleran? I’m Aiden Perkins. I’d like to talk to you please.”

The door opened, but the chain remained in place. “If you need police help, you can contact the station,” Andy said.

“No, you don’t understand, we need to talk to you specifically,” Aiden said as Andy looked behind Aiden and took in Lauren and Derrick. “I know this is weird but can we come in?”

Andy paused, thinking it over, then frowned and closed the door, unchaining it and reopening it. “Not sure why I’m doing this,” he said as he grumbled in a quiet voice, gesturing for them to come in.

“Thanks,” Aiden said, aware of his heart pounding and his palms sweating. “This is Lauren Kurtz and Derrick Getty.”

Andy nodded a greeting to them and then frowned, seeing the camcorder in Derrick’s hand and the remote speaker-like device in Lauren’s hand. “What’s this all about?”

Aiden took a deep breath, suddenly acutely aware of how preposterous this sounded. “Cadence Riley asked us to come and speak to you.”

Andy arched an eyebrow and looked at them for a moment, then shook his head. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

“No, we can prove it!” Derrick said, piping up, trying to salvage the situation.

“Oh really?” Andy asked, his voice dripping in sarcasm. “How?”

Lauren turned on the spirit box, and the sound of static filled the apartment. “Because she can actually talk to you with this device and prove it to you herself.
